A morning workout isn’t just energizing — it’s your secret to all-day calm.

Professor Dr. Syed AK Azad, former Head of the Ophthalmology Department at Mount Sinai Hospital, believes that the eyes can suddenly become affected in several ways during the summer. The most common eye conditions seen in hot weather are:

1. Dry Eyes

According to Dr. Azad, intense heat and sunlight can cause the moisture in the eyes to evaporate, leading to dryness during the summer.

2. Excessive Tearing

Another common issue is continuous tearing. When the temperature rises, the eye’s nerve system can get disturbed, which results in constant watering of the eyes.

3. Eye Allergies

Allergic reactions in the eyes increase in the summer due to excessive heat and pollution. This causes itching, redness, and even a burning sensation when exposed to sunlight.

4. Stye (Anjuli)

This condition causes swelling, redness, and pain in the eyelid, usually due to bacterial infections that become more common in the heat.

5. Redness

Sometimes, due to summer heat, the eyes appear red. This happens due to increased blood flow in the eyes.

6. Dryness and Irritation

In high temperatures, the eyes may feel dry, twitchy, and irritated, often giving a feeling like something is stuck in the eye.

7. Itching

Pollen levels are higher in summer air, which can trigger allergic reactions and cause intense itching around the eyelids and corners of the eyes.

8. Light Sensitivity (Photophobia)

Excessive heat and bright sunlight can make eyes sensitive to light, causing discomfort and making it difficult to keep eyes open outdoors.

9. Blurred Vision

High temperatures and dryness can temporarily affect visual clarity, leading to blurry vision.

10. Eye Fatigue

In summer, eye fatigue is more common. The combination of dust, dirt, microbes, and hot wind directly hitting the eyes creates a constant feeling of discomfort and strain.

11. Eye Stroke

Due to dehydration and sleep problems caused by summer heat, high blood pressure may rise, which can lead to severe issues like an eye stroke. Additionally, exposure to heat from the sun or kitchen stoves can increase this risk.

Tips for Eye Protection in Summer:

  • Wear sunglasses regularly
  • Use an umbrella when outdoors
  • Avoid direct exposure to heat and air from ACs
  • Stay hydrated
  • Ensure 8 hours of sleep daily
  • Clean your eyes regularly
  • Eat a healthy diet with leafy greens and colorful fruits
