Trapezius Winging
Winged scapula read…. Sacroiliac joint dysfunction or Sciatica
We can see the trapezius muscle. Lateral winging of the scapula is due to dysfunction of the trapezius muscle
The trapezius muscle is supplied by the spinal accessory nerve
This nerve can be injured by a blunt trauma traction or penetrating trauma including surgery like LN biopsy. Radical neck dissection. If the muscle is paralyzed, then you get a lateral winging of the scapula. The shoulder is depressed. The scapula is translated laterally. The inferior angle rotated laterally.
Symptoms
Pain and despair of the rhomboids and levator scapulae as they try to compensate for the deformity. The process may lead to a frozen shoulder, subacromial impingement, and may even irritation of the nerve roots.
Signs
A waist trapezius unable to shrug the shoulder. Weakness of forward elevation and abduction. The EMG will confirm the diagnosis
