Temazepam 15 mg (Restoril) Side Effects & Precautions

Temazepam may cause drowsiness, so should be administered with caution when driving or operating machinery. Overdose may lead to motor control, impairment, muscular weakness, hypotension, confusion, lethargy, respiratory depression and coma. It may also cause dependence and tolerance, so the dose may need to be changed under the supervision of the healthcare provider. At the end of treatment, doses should be reduced gradually to avoid withdrawal syndrome or rebound effect.

Precautions

Temazepam shouldn’t be administered to patients with severe respiratory insufficiency or severe hepatic impairment, and also should be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Temazepam shouldn’t be combined with alcohol or drugs acting on the central nervous system. Because of the risk of increased sedation. Examples of these drugs include opioid analgesics, neuroleptics such as chlorpromazine and haloperidol, antihistamines such as chlorpheniramine and promethazine, antidepressants such as clomipramine and fluoxetine, and phenobarbital

Advice

Avoid intake of alcoholic beverages or other CNS depressants such as sleeping pills, antihistamines, and narcotics, unless specifically ordered by your physician. Avoid sudden position changes to prevent orthostatic hypotension or fainting, as this may occur, especially in elderly patients. Drowsiness is worse at the beginning of treatment. Temazepam may be habit forming, so discuss use with your physician. Take temazepam with food if gastrointestinal upset occurs.
